The fruiting body of the chaga is not the typical mushroom cap but a dark, irregular mass that resembles a charred piece of wood or bark. Chaga has a hard, black exterior and a softer, orange-brown interior when broken open. It primarily grows on the trunks of birch trees but can also be found on other tree species in similar climates.
